Background: Zhigang Li is an associate professor of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. He received his PhD in Urban Geography from the University of Southampton in the UK in 2005. Li’s research focuses on the social spatial issues of Chinese cities. His recent work concentrates upon the impacts of globalization and market-reform upon south China’s socio and spatial structures. He has conducted many studies in the communities of Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan and Shenzhen to examine new migrant suburbs such as ‘chengzhongcun’. Li has published over fifty papers in both Chinese and English, including a number of top journals such as Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers. His book, ‘Transformation of Urban China’s Socio-spatial Structure’ (2011) was been published by Southeast University Press in China.
