Research Context, Methods and Goals:
The Everyday Suburbanisms research will take place in Toronto (Douglas Young, Deborah Cowen), Bangalore (Solly Benjamin), Delhi (Shubhra Gururani), and Johannesburg (Alan Mabin) during Years 1-3.5.
In Toronto the focus will be on transportation, in particular public transit, and its use and impact on the organization of daily life. A secondary focus of the research will be on the use of digital communications technology in everyday life. This will connect with the National Film Board’s (NFB) Highrise project.
In Delhi and Bangalore, the focus will be everyday lives of work, mobility, and migration, conducted mainly through ethnographic research with villagers, migrant workers, and the new middle class suburbanites.
